Gayhurstian Simon Verity, Sculptor, 1945 - 2024
Simon, born in Amersham in 1945 to parents Terence, an architect and art director and his mother Enid, an artist. Simon attended Gayhurst in the 1950's before moving on to Marlborough College. After leaving school Simon spent five years with his uncle, Oliver Hill, another architect at his home, Daneway House in Gloucestershire - a home renowned for its connection to the arts.
Simon went on to become an accomplished sculptor, working on the Victoria and Albert Museum, Cathedral of St John the Divine in New York and John Betjeman's memorial stone to name but a few.
In 2007 he took on his last major public work, the stonework and lettering for what has become known as the Queen Elizabeth II September 11th Garden, in Hanover Square, near the site of the World Trade Center to commemorate the British and Commonwealth victims of the 9/11 attacks.
