Mary attended Gayhurst with her twin brother in the 1940's. This was the first time in 80 years that Mary has been back to Gayhurst, and whilst we were not a co-ed school at the time, Mary and two other girls including Priscilla Gibbs attended as children of staff. Mary enjoyed reminiscing about the bunkers and eating lunch in her classroom as well as seeing the changes that have happened in the last 80 years.

After leaving Gayhurst, Mary went on to attend Cheltenham and later played cricket for England.

Her mother, Doreen, spent many years teaching swimming at Gayhurst following her gold-medal success in the relay event at the inaugural British Empire Games in 1930. Doreen also captained the England Women’s Ice Hockey team, founded the Amersham Swimming Club, and served as a local councillor for 17 years. After her death, the family discovered the diary she had kept during World War II and subsequently published it
